NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After an exceptional rookie season with the Yale women's track and field program, outstanding middle-distance runner Jocelyn Chau has been selected as one of just 47 athletes to represent Canada at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships.
Hosted in San Jose, Costa Rica, the meet will include athletes hailing from 31 different countries, including 25 women from Chau's home country of Canada. This is not the first time the Toronto native has represented Canada for track and field. In the summer of 2018 she finished ninth overall at the World Junior Championships in the 1500 meters.
After consistent performances in events ranging from 800 meters to six kilometers during her first year at Yale, Chau will be focusing on the 1500 meters at this year's Pan-Am U20 competition. Joining Chau to represent Canada in the 1500 meters is Maggie Smith of Halifast Athletics in Nova Scotia. The two will compete alongside sprinters, hurdlers, throwers and other distance runners in the hopes of building upon Canada's 2017 performance, which included 22 overall medals -- the country's best finish in 30 years.
The meet will take place July 19-21 at National Stadium.
